I am patriotic.

I still haven't put up the flag - its absence, from hanging on our outer wall, reflects the true sorry state of our family that cannot celebrate our national abundance.

We haven't travelled overseas to escape this national holiday, like so many patriotic Singaporeans: I've mentioned many times, ad nauseam, that our family cannot afford to renew the 2nd most powerful passports in the world.

Anyway, we're not the workaholic kind who splurges our disposable cash on costly tourism. After all, an island north of us is currently under aerial and naval blockade, also in an extended show of patriotic arrogance.

And no, after so many decades, we're no longer watching the skies for fireworks money being exploded, and plane fuel being expended, drunk with glee.

That money we need, to pay our essential bills and debts.
