Once when the island was real estate for an empire spanning the globe half the planet away, the loyalties of migrants become native necessarily bowed towards their faraway overlords and ladies.
Eventually, the usurper shocked the locals that complacent compliance was not their lot in life thereafter, especially since colonial masters just as much shackled and oppressed, and did not uphold your masses’ ways of life for their whims as rulers.
So, another nation is born, with high ideals impossible to not pervert with old realities of human nature. But loyalties transferred ownerships, except now we could say we were blindly on support of our own.
So you and I could have been born around that time, and been part of that then-new experiment, to establish a new class of mandarins, extinguish old intelligentsia, reaffirm new proles in the masses. And then again leave out independents who did not fit their originality in, but were also deemed ineffectual and no threat enough to be ignored in indifferent silence.
